The History of 420
Every April 20th, people around the world come together to celebrate their love for the cannabis plant and its culture. But where did this tradition originate, and how did it become so popular?
The origin of 420 dates back to the early 1970s in California, where a group of high school students known as "the Waldos" would gather at 4:20 p.m. every day to smoke cannabis. The group would use "420" as a code word for cannabis and eventually the term caught on with other students. It wasn't long before the term spread beyond the group of friends and became a widely recognized symbol of cannabis culture.
In 1990, High Times magazine published an article about the history of 420, which further popularized the term. Their article explained how the Waldos would meet at a statue of Louis Pasteur on the campus of San Rafael High School in California and smoke weed. Quickly the term 420 spread among Grateful Dead fans and other cannabis enthusiasts, eventually becoming a global phenomenon.
Today, 420 is celebrated around the world with events, concerts, and festivals. In the United States, states that have legalized recreational cannabis often hold massive celebrations on April 20th. These events are a testament to the growing acceptance of cannabis and its culture.
